Staff Lists: Best Albums Of 2011 By Katie Kather

By Katie Kather

Disclaimer: My musical taste may seem unbalanced, but it did not take me long to notice a common thread as I was compiling this list. I am a sucker for positive lyrics and upbeat melodies of any genre.

THE AIRBORNE TOXIC EVENT – ALL AT ONCE

The Airborne Toxic Event is best known for their 2008 hit, “It Starts Sometime Around Midnight.” However, their latest release, All at Once is full of upbeat tracks that showcase the band’s raw musical talent. The violin is an essential instrument throughout the album, lending to a unique sound. “Changing” is my favorite song on the album because of its cheerful melody. The bombastic video for “Changing” is a must see.

FLORENCE + THE MACHINE – CEREMONIALS

Ceremonials is Florence &The Machine’s latest album, released just one month ago. This album highlights the interesting range of the lead singer’s voice. “Shake it Out” is my favorite track on this album because of its positive lyrics. I am a fan of any song I can belt out while driving, especially one that reminds me that I am a powerful woman.

NATALIE GRANT – LOVE REVOLUTION

While I am typically not a Natalie Grant fan, I love the song “Your Great Name.” This song welcomes you into a place of worship. It starts slow, but the lyrics and music build as the song plays.

LADY GAGA – BORN THIS WAY

My love for this album is based on one thing: fun. Love her or hate her, Lady GaGa knows how to make the perfect song for a road trip playlist.

LUPE FIASCO – LASERS

Lasers was one of my favorite albums this year. The song “Till I Get There” has solid lyrics and beats.
