Movie Review: Beauty and the Beast 3D

By Melissa Beneke

On Friday, Jan. 13, Disney released Beauty and the Beast in 3D. This new version of the classic Disney film deserves 8 out of 10 for its ability to draw the audience in to the magic.

The movie captured the hearts of the audience with a tale of change and love. The Beast starts out as a monster that only cares about himself. Not only does he make many transitions, he also changes from a beast at heart to a warm hearted man. He soon finds himself in love with a beautiful young woman, Bell. The 3D release of Beauty and the Beast will likely bring back nostalgic feelings that viewers felt when they watched the movie when it was released in 1991.

All ages would love this movie. Teens and adults will enjoy reminiscing about aspects of their childhoods while children will to see the magic recreated on the big screen and in more realistic ways. The film is also a great way for all ages to connect with each other over this daring and lovable fairy tale.

The 3D aspects of the classic movie added amazing depth. Scenery created an added beauty that made the movie seem more realistic. Characters stood staggered on the screen. When Bell stood forward, the Beast appeared to stand behind her.

The colors were vibrant and exciting. Plant life including flowers, trees and pathways allowed the audience to connect with the film in a way they couldn’t have done before. The magic of Disney movies made it almost possible to touch the plants and become a part of the magic. The transformation of Beast’s palace from dark to light was an amazing addition to the film. The 3D visuals added an exciting and mystical feeling and made me believe was I watching it for the first time.

The proportions of some characters in the film presented some minor flaws. At times, Bell would appear strangely tiny in comparison to the world around her. These scenes made the movie appear a less realistic, but didn’t take away from the magic.

Disney also released a new short with the film called Tangled Ever After. The short added another layer to the exciting story of Rapunzel. Some trouble ensues making the short exciting and enjoyable at the same time. If you want to know more, then you will have to see it for yourself.

Overall, the same classic music, magic and characters are back to make another successful Disney 3D experience.
