A Sweet, Suburban Alternative: Geneva’s The Latest Crave

When going to school in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago during my first two years of college, an upperclassman introduced me to an adorably old fashioned dessert shop called Sweet Mandy B’s.  I immediately fell in love with the balanced mix of old charm and vibrant colors, not to mention the astounding array of desserts.  But when I decided to transfer to AU, Sweet Mandy B’s was no longer a block away from campus.

You can imagine my delight then, when a friend took me to The Latest Crave cupcake shop in downtown Geneva.  Adorned with a lime green polka-dot awning and a pastel pink door, the colors alone caught my attention.

Upon entering, the décor is minimalist.  Excluding the kitchen, The Latest Crave is about the size of a large walk-in closet.  There is a continuation of the front door with pastel pink walls, a few white table and chair sets for guests and some cute little knick-knacks that are available for purchase.

But after your eyes adjust to the pink walls, you’re drawn to the display case which contains a diverse collection of cupcakes.  Along with the old favorites, chocolate and vanilla, there were all kinds of colors and flavors that I had never seen on a cupcake.  One of these was the PB-n-J.  Yes, a peanut butter and jelly cupcake.  The peanut butter flavored cake had grape jelly filling, topped with marshmallow fluff as the frosting.  Sound appetizing?

Being a peanut butter aficionado, but not so much on the jelly, I settled on the Peanut butter cup.   This was a milk chocolate cupcake with peanut butter filling inside and peanut butter frosting on top—not complete without the milk chocolate shavings neatly placed upon the mountain of frosting.

At risk of sounding like a salesperson, that’s not all! The Latest Crave specializes in designer and personalized cupcakes.  Some of the other flavors are:  Lemon Pound Cake, Key Lime, Orange Filled, Pinkie, Coconut and White Chocolate Raspberry Truffle.

Regular chocolate and vanilla cupcakes cost $2.50 and the specialty cupcakes cost $3.00.  Visit their website, thelatestcrave.com or stop by their shop to see more cupcake flavors and other desserts.  Store hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Tues. through Sat. at 227 S. Third St., Geneva.
