Spartan Offense Clips the Eagles’ Wings in Game One of Doubleheader

Lisle-ILL Aside from the NCAA World Series Championship game there is no bigger game for the Aurora University baseball team than playing Benedictine University. The Spartans took on the Eagles for the first time this year in a game that counts toward the NAC standings and overall record. Students, parents and baseball alumni gathered to cheer on their teams. It is safe to say that the Spartan supporters outnumbered the Eagles supporters in size and energy. Some AU baseball alumni gathered to root for their former teammates. So much they received a warning from an umpire for distracting the BU pitcher. Chanting “lalalalalalalalala” over and over again is seen as “unsportsmanlike conduct.”

The crowd’s energy must have transferred to the field. The Spartans won the first game 11-4. Drew Gay earned the win while giving up just 2 earned runs and 7 hits and Luke Gilbertson earned the save.

After AU gained a 1-0 lead in the first the next few innings were slow offensively for both teams. The next score was in the fourth inning when senior catcher, Ryan Payne hit a double scoring 2 runs. It did not end there for the Spartans. Senior Tim Mackey brought Payne home with a triple then senior, Ryan Adams was walked leaving runners on first and third. Adams got in a pickle between first and second base which allowed Mackey to score. In the bottom half of the inning BU retaliated with 1 run making the score 4-1.

In the fifth AU had huge plays defensively. The Eagles had the bases loaded and looked liked they were about to score on a base hit, but outfielder, Adams. Adams hosed the runner at the plate causing BU to come up scoreless in the fifth.

The Spartans were just getting started offensively. In the seventh inning AU scored 4 runs including a solo home run by Mackey and a RBI by junior, Corey Walden and finally a home run by junior, Mike Foley making the score 8-2. Gay and the Spartans had a three-up-three-down inning to follow.

Going into the ninth, senior, Brett VanAsdlen homered scoring Adams and earning two RBIs. The final score of the game was 11-4 Aurora.

Benedictine won the second game 8-6. The next Spartan baseball game will be Friday, April 6 when they host the University of Chicago.
