Rockford resident Fred Bornkamp lit Aurora University’s Spartan flame to open AU’s homecoming football game against visiting Benedictine University Oct. 6. Bornkamp, an Aurora College 1985 graduate and former AC coach and student-athlete, joined seven Aurora University cross-country team members who ran a torch from Mendota to Aurora. The 45-mile run revived an AC-AU homecoming tradition dating back more than 50 years. The Advent Christian denomination founded Mendota Seminary in 1893, forerunner of Aurora College (1912) which became Aurora University in 1985. AU defeated Benedictine 41-30.
