Domestic Violence Awareness Month

By: Natalie Gonzalez

Did you know that 1-in-3 women and 1-in-5 men will experience some sort of domestic violence during their lifetime. According to, the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ), “Approximately 1-in-3 adolescent girls in the United States fall victim to physical, emotional, or verbal abuse from a dating partner – a figure thatfar exceeds victimization rates for other types of violence affecting youth”

October marks the time of the year when the leaves change color and the weather gets colder, all while we anxiously await the arrival of pumpkin spice lattes and Halloween themed decorations. The month of October happens to be Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a subject that isn’t as publicly highlighted and talked about, as the infamous pumpkin spiced flavored everything, or the corn maze at your local pumpkin patch.

Throughout the month of October the NFJFCJ, along with other committees throughout the nation, honor victims and survivors of domestic violence through different awareness events and campaigns.

Mutual Ground is one of Aurora’s oldest and largest service agencies in the Illinois area, for victims and survivors of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. Mutual Ground provides services and resources free of charge to all of it’s clients. This is made possible through grants, corporate and individual donations, and churches.

Here, at Aurora University, there are various organizations that collectively support Mutual Ground’s efforts by bringing awareness to Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. This is done through different charitable and educational programs. Some of the organizations supporting the efforts are the Aurora Criminal Justice Association (ACJA), AU’s Psychology Club, the Zeta Tau Chapter of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. and Resident Life.
